Hendrik Bentinck (1699-1774) was a Dutch nobleman who served as a diplomat and politician. He was born into a wealthy family and received a good education. He held various positions in the government and was appointed as the ambassador to the court of George II of Great Britain in 1734.
Bentinck was a skilled negotiator and played a key role in the Treaty of Vienna in 1738, which ended the War of the Polish Succession. He was also involved in the negotiations that led to the Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle in 1748, which ended the War of the Austrian Succession. In recognition of his services, he was created a Count of the Holy Roman Empire in 1749.
Bentinck later served as the governor of the Dutch province of Overijssel and played a role in the abolition of the Dutch East India Company. He was known for his liberal views and support for the Enlightenment. He was also a patron of the arts and supported the painter Cornelis Troost.
Bentinck was married to Wilhelmina Cornelia von Aerssen, with whom he had six children. He died in 1774 and was succeeded by his son Willem Anne Bentinck, who also served as a diplomat and politician.
